How will BREXIT affect you?

Last week 17 million UK citizens voted to leave the European Union in an historic BREXIT (Britain’s EU exit) referendum, which has sent shock waves around world markets. Since the unexpected result, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced his resignation and the favourite to replace him is the Home Secretary, Theresa May.



What does this mean for migrants already here or thinking of coming to live or work in the UK?



Mass immigration was one of the main reasons why millions of Britons voted to come out of the EU, so on the face of it things do not look good for migrants. 



On the other hand, Britain still needs skilled workers and a reduction in European immigration could open on the market for non-EU migrants with the right skills that the country needs.



Regardless of the EU vote, immigration rules have been tightening up for many years and life has become tougher for non-EU migrants. Yet despite six years of tighter immigration controls, UK net migration increased to around 350,000 last year, well above the government’s target to reduce this to the tens of thousands.




Britain is still a member of the European Union until such time as the formal process to leave completes. This ‘Article 50’ exit process, once started, will take at least two years, during which time the terms of ‘divorce’ will be thrashed out by EU leaders. This will, no doubt, include free movement rights for EU and EEA citizens in return for access to the single market.  



Meanwhile, thousands of students and workers, such as nurses and doctors, are already voting with their feet and opting for countries like Australia, Canada which offer an easier route to permanent residence and citizenship, while the UK imposes further hurdles for skilled working migrants.



We are in uncharted waters and nobody, including the government, knows how this will play out. We just have to keep doing what we always do, get on with our lives and look after our own internal economy.



Do you really a need to migrate?



It has long been assumed that people in poorer countries must emigrate to richer countries to succeed and earn a living for their family.  However, this is no longer be the first choice for everyone. There has been a substantial economic shift during the past decade helped on by the technological and information revolutions. 



Millions of people are now choosing to work from home and avoid the pain of leaving their families behind for employment thousands of miles away. Major outsourcing platforms like Upwork.com and Fivver offer anyone with a laptop and an internet connection the chance to earn a living working from the comfort of their own home anywhere in the world. 



We can also trade stocks and shares or foreign exchange (FOREX) using inexpensive real-time technology that would have previously only been available to large institutions.



Students can also earn legitimate degrees from major universities online at a fraction of the cost of travelling abroad.



Making money with home-based businesses like Affiliate Marketing - selling other people's products for a commission - now offers huge opportunities in the home-based business economy and I believe it is only just getting started. 



Companies like Amazon and Ebay offer affiliate marketing programs, albeit for small commissions meaning you have to sell a lot of products to make serious money. With some schemes, you will need quite a bit of technical knowledge to set up your own websites, systems and marketing campaigns.



More and more people are looking to ditch the daily grind of long commute, doing a job they hate and spending half their lives trading their time for money and working to make someone else rich.

EU Migrant 4 Year Residency Test For Benefits Will Hit Young Britons

New government plans to tighten the rules of EU migrants includes a four year residency test for to qualify for benefits. However, the stringent new test could also mean young Britons losing the right to claim benefits for four years.

Lawyers claim that applying the rule to migrants alone would breach EU laws, so the government is considering applying it to all UK benefit applicants from the age of 18. 

In a speech last year Prime Minister David Cameron said:

“Changes to welfare - to cut EU migration - will be an absolute requirement in the negotiation that I'm going to undertake."

Cameron has urged EU leaders to agree to his “reasonable proposals”, one being migrants arriving in the UK have to wait four years to access certain benefits.

Such a proposal could be deemed discriminatory and breach EU law.

 Britons may be affected as even if they have been a UK resident all their lives, from their 18th birthday would be ineligible for the benefits for four years until they reach 22. The plan is estimated to affect about 50,000 UK citizens under the age of 22, most with children.

The lawyers' assessment said: "Imposing additional requirements on EU workers that do not apply to a member state's own workers constitutes direct discrimination which is prohibited under current EU law."

British Labour Party politician Stephen Timms assumed that the EU negotiations were "not going well" and ministers were beginning to realise that they were not delivering their promises.

The former Tory Leader has pushed for the proposal of EU nationals to have been working in the UK for four years before they become eligible for benefits.

Some of the EU countries have strongly opposed the plans for a tougher benefit rule for EU migrants, including the Polish government. The government has already been taken to court over its habitual resident test by the European Commission.

"We've already taken action to protect the benefits system and ensure that EU migrants come to this country for the right reasons and to contribute to the economy.” said a government spokesman’s.

"Now we're focused on re-negotiating our relationship with Europe and getting a better deal for Britons, and we won't speculate on other options."
