New Global Talent Visa Route

Migrants who have gained prestigious awards from across the sciences, humanities, engineering, the arts and digital technology will be able to take advantage of changes to the Global Talent visa route.

The Home Office said those currently on the Global Talent route - which came into force in February 2020 and has been used by thousands of people to migrate to the UK - must apply successfully to one of six endorsing bodies.

The new visa route allows applicants who hold a qualifying prize to fast track the endorsement application and instead make a single visa application.

The eligible prize winners include:

•       Science, technology, engineering and maths: Nobel Prize winners in physics, chemistry, economic science and medicine; Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering; Fields Medal; Turing Award

•       Music: Brit Award - International Male/Female; Mobo - Best International Act; Grammys - Lifetime Achievement Award

•       Film, TV and theatre: Various Academy Award and Golden Globe categories; Bafta - Best Film Actress/Actor/Director; various Tony Awards and Olivier Awards

•       Arts and literature: Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize; Hugo Boss Prize; Nobel Prize for literature

The Home Office confirmed that recipients of approved awards across dance, fashion, architecture, and social sciences will also be included.

The Home Office has worked with the endorsing bodies to draft the initial list of qualifying prizes, which will be kept under review.

New Traffic Light System Will Regulate Overseas Holiday Travel And UK Visitors

Starting 17 May, people in England will be permitted to take holidays abroad in a small number of countries.

Portugal and Israel are among countries on the government's green list, which tourists will be able to visit without having to quarantine on their return.

Countries are in three categories - green, amber and red. Green countries have the fewest rules.

Their status depends on the number of Covid-19 cases in each country and the success of their vaccine rollout.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have not yet announced plans to restart foreign holidays.

Which countries are UK holidaymakers permitted to visit?

There are only 12 countries and territories on the green list so far - these are:

·        Portugal

·        Israel

·        Singapore

·        Australia

·        New Zealand

·        Brunei

·        Iceland

·        Gibraltar

·        Falkland Islands

·        Faroe Islands

·        South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands

·        St Helena, Tristan de Cunha and Ascension Island

The list will be reviewed every three weeks, and countries can be added or removed at short notice. Although on the UK green list, Australia does not currently allow UK visitors.

What are the rules for visiting a green list country?

Green List

Travellers will need to:

·        Take a private Covid test in their holiday destination, before returning - this can be a lateral flow test or a PCR test

·        Fill in a passenger locator form online before leaving their destination

·        Take a private PCR test on or before day two of their arrival in England

·        No need to quarantine on return, or take additional tests, unless the post-arrival test is positive

The cost of a private PCR test varies between suppliers, but the transport secretary said he hoped prices could come down to less than £50 per person. Tui Group is offering test packages for between £20 and £90.

Amber List

Travellers returning from amber list counties will need to:

·        Take a private Covid test in their holiday destination, before returning

·        Fill in a passenger locator form online before leaving their destination

·        Self-isolate at home for 10 days

·        Take a private PCR test on or before day two of their arrival in England and again on day eight

·        Take an optional further PCR test on day five, under the existing test to release scheme, to end self-isolation early

Red List

Rules will be similar to those already in place for current red list countries, including India, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Peru, Brazil and South Africa.

Turkey, the Maldives and Nepal have now been added to the list, making a total of 43 countries.

People can only enter the UK if they are a UK or Irish national (or UK resident).

Travellers will have to:

·        Take a private Covid test in their holiday destination, before returning to England

·        Fill in a passenger locator form online before they leave their destination

·        Book a 10-day hotel quarantine and testing package for each member of their group before departure

·        Take a private PCR test on or before day two of their arrival in England and again on day eight

Countries can be added to the red list at short notice. If a country's status changes while you are visiting, you would have to follow the stricter rules on your return.

·       The European Commission has recommended allowing travel for anyone who has received the last dose of an EU-approved vaccine at least two weeks beforehand. Vaccines used in the UK would qualify

·        Greece's tourism minister tweeted that tourism will reopen on 14 May, but with five security levels

·        Portugal and Cyprus hope to welcome UK tourists from mid May

·        Spain hopes to open up from June, assuming the EU-wide digital certificate is in place

·        France says tourists with a French Covid-19 "health pass" (TousAntiCovid) will be allowed from 9 June

How can travellers prove they've been vaccinated?

From 17 May the NHS app will include a feature allowing users to demonstrate they have had both vaccine doses.

The system will be incorporated into the main NHS app, rather than the NHS Covid-19 app currently used for contact tracing.

The hope is that this can be used as proof of vaccination when people holiday abroad. A letter can also be requested.

What are the current international arrival rules?

At the moment, people in England face a £5,000 fine for having a holiday abroad and must fill in a travel declaration form with a valid reason for their journey.

Before travelling:

You must take a Covid-19 test (in the three days before your departure).

You must book and pay for two PCR tests for your UK quarantine, unless you are exempt and complete a passenger locator form.

Upon arrival:

You must travel directly to your home/place you're staying and not leave for 10 days.

Only use public transport if you have no other option.

Day one of quarantine is your first full 24-hour day in the UK. Rule-breaking fines are £10,000.

Common Travel Area arrivals (Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man) do not have to arrange tests, fill out the locator form or quarantine.

There is separate advice for quarantining in:

·        Scotland

·        Wales

·        Northern Ireland

When would I need to quarantine in a hotel?

Anyone allowed to enter England from a red list country (or who has passed through one in the previous 10 days) must quarantine for 10 full days in a managed facility, rather than a private address.

You will need to agree to book and pay for a quarantine package in advance.

·        10-day (11-night) rate for one adult in one room is £1,750

·        Additional rate for one adult (or child over 11) is £650

·        Children aged five to 11 are charged £325

You can be fined £10,000 or jailed for not providing accurate details of countries you visited.

The UK government has announced the launch of a new 95% mortgage scheme.

A new government-backed mortgage guarantee scheme, announced in the March Budget, to help people with 5% deposits get on to the housing ladder will be available to lenders from today 19 April 2021, a spokesperson confirmed.

The scheme will help BOTH first time buyers AND current homeowners obtain a mortgage with a 5% deposit to buy a house of up to £600,000 – offering a route to home ownership to those with low deposits.

The government is essentially giving lenders the guarantee they need to provide mortgages that cover the other 95%, subject to the usual affordability checks. In the past, insurance companies provided this guarantee for a premium.

The scheme is now available from major high street lenders across the country today, including Lloyds, Santander, Barclays, HSBC and NatWest and Virgin Money following next month.

In 2019, the government made a pledge to build 300,000 new and attractive homes a year with an investment of over £12 billion in affordable housing over the next 5 years – the largest investment in a decade.

Since 2010, more than 687,000 households have been helped into home ownership through government schemes, but when asked, 69% of private renters and 63% of those living at home who had looked into a mortgage said they cannot find many mortgages with a low deposit.

The guarantee scheme is one of a range of flexible home ownership options available including:

·        Help to Buy

·        Shared Ownership

·        First Homes Scheme.

Figures show that the number of mortgage approvals for house purchases in January 2021 was 99,000 – a 40% increase on January 2020.

The government has helped over 685,000 households to purchase a home since 2010 through government backed schemes including Help to Buy and Right to Buy.

Taxpayers will bail out banks if loans default and they lose money

The higher the loan-to-value, the higher the risk for lenders, as borrowers have less skin in the game and can walk away in the event of a property crash or negative equity.

The mortgage guarantee scheme provides lenders with the option to purchase a guarantee on the top-slice of the mortgage, which means the government will compensate the mortgage lender for a portion of any net losses incurred in the event of repossession. In other words, the guarantee applies down to 80% of the purchase value of the guaranteed property.

The guarantee will be valid for up to 7 years after the mortgage has started and evidence shows that loans are unlikely to default after this time.

However, the scheme is intended as a temporary measure and will be open for new mortgage applications from April 2021 to December 2022.

Lenders can still pursue you for losses after you have been repossessed if they do not get their money back on a ‘forced sale’ – usually at auction.

The government said the current scarcity of high loan-to-value lending is a response to the pandemic rather than a symptom of a longer-term structural change in the mortgage market.

The government will review the scheme towards the planned end date to determine whether extending the period of eligibility for new mortgages would continue to deliver benefits for prospective buyers.

The stamp duty holiday comes to an end in June, prompting fears of a slowdown in the property market. The new guarantee scheme could push prices to new record highs making it more difficult for first-time-buyers to get on the property ladder.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II's husband of 73 years, has died aged 99, at Windsor Castle.

In a statement just after midday, the palace spoke of the Queen's "deep sorrow" following his death at Windsor Castle on Friday morning.

The Duke of Edinburgh, the longest-serving consort in British history, had returned to Windsor on 16 March after a month in hospital.

Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people".

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband," the palace said.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Speaking at Downing Street, the Prime Minister said that the Duke had "earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world".

The flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast and a notice was posted on the gates following the announcement of the Duke's death.

Prince Philip was born into nobility on the Greek island of Corfu on 10 June 1921. His father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, younger son of King George I of the Hellenes. His mother, Princess Alice, was a daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg and a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

His family fled Greece as refugees when he a baby. He once said that they would have been stateless, after Greece became a republic, were it not for the patronage of the Danish Royal Family who gave them Danish passports.

Philip, Christened Philippos, was his parents’ only son, after four daughters. By then his grandfather, who ruled Greece as George I, had been assassinated by a Greek in 1913, and his successor, Philip’s uncle Constantine, had been deposed four years later for failing to support the allied powers, including Britain and France, in the first world war.

After the three-year reign of his second son, Alexander, Constantine was reinstated by referendum in 1920. Two years later he was again overthrown, in a military upheaval. George V of Britain, son of great-aunt Alexandra, sent a naval cruiser to rescue Andrew, who was facing trial for treason, and his young family. The year-old Philip was placed in an orange box and rowed out to a British ship with the rest of the family.

Prime Minister Johnson praised Prince Philip's service and "bravery" in the Second World War, as well as his contributions after - from being a "champion of the natural world" through to having "shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people" through the Duke of Edinburgh award.
