UK Immigration Figures Soar to 745,000 Forcing Government to Cut Working and Student Visa Numbers in the “Biggest Ever Cut in Net Migration”

The British Home Secretary, James Cleverly has announced sweeping changes to the UK Immigration Rules in a bid to bring in the ‘biggest ever cut in net immigration’ which reached the ‘biggest ever’ 745,000 in 2022 – after 1.2 million came in to the country.

Working visas and student numbers will curbed, with new rules on minimum salaries and dependents to prevent what he described as ‘abuse’.

New immigration rules

Most migrants wanting to work in the UK will still have to apply for a visa through a points-based system (PBS).

Starting spring 2024, applicants will need to have a job offer with a revised higher salary in order to get a work visa.

The new minimum salary will be at least £38,700 - increased by nearly 50% from the current minimum £26,200.

Health and social care jobs will be exempt as there are still shortages of care workers I the UK.

However, overseas care workers will no longer be able to bring in family dependants.

The points system was introduced by the Labour government in 2008 – as part of a previous immigration overhaul - non-EU migrants. The system overhauled by the Conservatives after the Brexit vote.

The 2020 version of the PBS covers EU and non-EU migrants.

The UK has "shortage occupation list" to help employers fill certain job vacancies.

Shortage jobs have a lower salary requirement, so applicants to obtain the required number of points to get a working visa.

Shortage Occupation Jobs include:

·        jobs in health and education

·        care workers

·        graphic designers

·        construction workers

·        vets

Employers are allowed to pay foreign workers 80% of the job's usual "going rate" to fill vacancies, which will be abolished from next spring.

Basic level international students will be prevented from bringing their dependents to the UK after figures reached 153,000 last year.

The UK will become a tougher places for students ad workers with higher NHS fees and minimum salaries above the national average. Meanwhile, other countries, such as Australia and Canada are welcoming students and workers with open arms with an easier route to permanent residence (PR) and citizenship than the UK.

More Than 1,000 Migrants Trafficked Across The English Channel To Seek Asylum In The UK In A Single Day As Government Says 'British Public Have Had Enough'

An estimated 1,000 migrants illegally crossed into the UK on Thursday as the government warns the number of people departing from France with a “bon voyage” message form officials is "unacceptable".

The figure could be the highest ever daily total of migrant crossings into Britain. The previous record for the number of migrants arriving in the UK aboard small boats in a single day is 853, set on 3 November.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "The number of illegal migrants we have seen departing from France today (Thursday) is unacceptable.

"The British public have had enough of seeing people die in the Channel while ruthless criminal gangs profit from their misery and our New Plan for Immigration will fix the broken system which encourages migrants to make this lethal journey."

Children wrapped in blankets were helped ashore in Dover this week, as Border Force and the RNLI rescue service, run by volunteers, responded to a flurry of small boats in the English Channel along the Kent coast.

As we come into the winter season and rougher seas, at least two people have died while trying to attempt the perilous journey and several more have been feared to be lost at sea.

More than 22,300 people have successfully made it to UK shores this year, according to data compiled by the PA news agency - more than double the number for the whole of 2020.

In 2019, Home Secretary Priti Patel promised to make migrant crossings an "infrequent phenomenon" by spring 2020 and then pledged in August last year to "make this route unviable".

The situation is getting worse despite the British government agreeing to pay France £54m to increase immigration controls.

French officials have been accused of helping migrants being illegally trafficked across treacherous waters in small to make it to the UK.

Migrant crisis on the Polish border

Meanwhile, thousands of Syrian and other Middle Eastern refugees are camped in Belarus on the Polish border having unsuccessfully attempted to enter Poland, a gateway to the European Union.

Polish immigration guards have been backed up by thousands of troops from the army to prevent what they say is a Russian sponsored invasion design to destabilise the EU.

In an interview with RT News, one Syrian family said they made the journey, organised by a ‘travel agent’, via Turkey where they spent a lot of money obtaining visas to enter Belarus with a view to crossing the border into Poland. They added that many of their relatives had previously made the trip and were in Germany.

A combination of climate change and the destruction of economies in Syria and Iraq has prompted millions of people to effectively force their way into the West by marching across Europe. They have given up on the usual legal means of applying for asylum or migrating to more prosperous countries.

The crisis will escalate as word spreads through the internet that nobody gets sent back once they arrive in places like the UK.

Someone is making a lot of money out of this – hotels, landlords, lawyers etc.

UK Government Consider Temporary Working Visa Changes To Solve Driver And Staff Shortages

The UK Environment Secretary has confirmed that the government is weighing up options on how to deal with growing labour shortages in the food sector.

George Eustice said the government was considering whether changes could be made to the Seasonal Agricultural Workers' Scheme (SAWS) - the temporary working visa quota-based scheme that allows farmers to recruit overseas for seasonal jobs.

Trade bodies have warned of panic-buying and food shortages this Christmas unless urgent action is taken to address the lack of staff and thousands of job vacancies in the UK.

Some blame the shortages on Covid and Brexit, but staff shortages have been building up for years.

Mr Eustice said "the reality that there is an acute labour shortage at the moment across the UK economy".

The SAWS scheme allowed 30,000 temporary workers to admitted to the UK this year to fill job vacancies in agriculture - mostly working on fruit and vegetable farms. Migrants have long filled farming jobs, like picking and packing of produce, that British workers refuse to do.

Mr Eustice added that there are "some real concerns about how we'll deal with that spike in demand in the two weeks up to Christmas".

"We have SAWS and we're looking at options as to how we can change the focus of that and we hope to be able to say something on this shortly," he continued.

When asked if he would be looking at changes to visas to address workforce shortages, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said on Thursday: "If that was actually the solution, I'm sure we would move to it quickly and I don't rule out anything."

500,000 unfilled agricultural job vacancies

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has called for another emergency visa to allow firms to recruit from outside the UK.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he does "not believe people will be short of food" this autumn and winter, amid reports of some gaps on supermarket shelves.

Mr Eustice has previously said the government wanted to monitor whether workers who may be made redundant when the furlough schemes finish at the end of September could instead enter the labour market where there are shortages. Those include areas such as lorry driving or meat processing.

However, he said if that did not happen "then the beauty of a controlled immigration system is you can take steps to allow people to come in on temporary visas should you want".

NFU head Minette Batters warned ministers that the food and farming sector is on a "knife edge" because of labour shortages across the entire supply chain.

The letter, signed on behalf of a number of food and drink trade bodies, called for the introduction of a Covid-19 recovery visa to open up new recruitment opportunities.

"Without it, more shelves will go empty and consumers will panic buy to try to get through the winter," Ms Batters wrote.

Referring to an earlier NFU report, Ms Batters said that there were an estimated 500,000 unfilled vacancies in the industry.

As well as the potential food shortage this Christmas, driver shortages are being blamed BP for growing fuel shortages in the UK.

The Home Office could include HGV Drivers on the shortage occupation list which would enable employers to apply for longer term working visas (work permits) to fill diver job vacancies.

This would fly in the face of the Brexit principle of controlling our borders and cutting immigration to boost jobs and pay for British workers.

Almost 5 million Granted UK Residence Under EU Settlement Scheme

Despite warnings of a mass ‘Brexit exodus’ of European migrants, it has emerged that just under five million people were granted the right to live and work in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme so far, according to official estimates.

Home Office figures reveal that, as of the end of June, some 4,908,760 EU citizens had been granted an immigration status to remain in the country as full freedom of movement to live and work in the UK came to a close following Brexit transition.

EU citizens – as well as people from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – and their families were invited to apply to the scheme by the June 30 deadline.

Quarterly data published this week showed that the Home Office had processed 5.5 million applications for settlement by the deadline, with the highest numbers of applications coming from Polish, Romanian and Italian nationals

The latest figures are much higher than the official estimate of how many EU nationals are living in the UK. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicated that in mid-2020 this was 3.5 million.

More than six million applications (6,050,860) were submitted between the launch of the scheme in March 2019 and the June 30 2021 cut-off date.

Over 2.8 million applicants were granted settled status, allowing them permanent leave to remain in the UK.

A further 2.3 million (2,327,850) were granted pre-settled status, meaning they need to reapply after living in the country for five years to gain permanent residence or indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Included in this number, immigration status was granted to 295,890 people from countries like India, Pakistan and Brazil under the scheme, which allows family members who are not EU or European Economic Area nationals to also apply.

The Home Office said: “Across all nationalities, the highest numbers of applications received were from Polish, Romanian and Italian nationals. This has been the trend throughout the life of the scheme.”

There were 109,430 applications refused, 80,600 withdrawn or void, and 79,730 were deemed invalid, where the Home Office decides someone is not eligible to apply or has failed to provide sufficient proof of residence.

The Home Office said 8% of the applications were from “repeat applicants” (472,220).

Among the applications were more than one million from children (1,002,280).

Some 772,260 of the applications from under-18s finalised by the end of June were granted an immigration status, while 32,870 requests were refused, withdrawn, void or invalid, the figures indicate.

In London, Newham saw the highest number of applications to the scheme (142,120). Outside London, the highest number was in Birmingham in the West Midlands (138,490).

It is still not known how many people in the UK are eligible for the scheme but could remain in the country undocumented.

Anyone who has not yet applied may have lost their lawful immigration status after the deadline, although late applications can be made under limited reasonable grounds and the Government has said there is no cut-off date for doing so.

Those who applied before the deadline but have yet to receive a decision are protected under existing rights, subject to the outcome of the application and any appeal.

Anyone who does not apply and continues to live in the UK without being able to prove their immigration status could face enforcement action. Most migrating EU citizens will in future need a work permit to live and work in the UK.

The UK has one million job vacancies including a shortage of lorry drivers and builders, much of which has been blamed on Brexit. However, the latest Home Office settlement figures appears to contradict this claim.

The mainstream media keep spreading rumours that there will be empty supermarket shelves this Christmas because of the lorry driver shortage and Brexit, yet everywhere I look there’s a lorry or van thundering down my street!

You can’t move for delivery vans dropping off goods to people who for whatever reason prefer not to go to a shop.

Finally, if most of our food is imported, would that not be delivered by a lorry from the country from which the food is being sent? Of course it would! That’s why our motorways are clogged up with juggernauts from Spain, Netherlands, Romania, Poland and just about every other EU country.

Last chance. Wednesday 30 June is the deadline for most European Union (EU) citizens to apply to live permanently in the UK as settled residents.

The take-up of the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) has been huge - but there are serious concerns that thousands of people have still not sought to register. Anyone who is not registered loses their legal right to live in the UK.

What is the EU Settlement Scheme?

The EUSS was launched in March 2019 to register EU citizens as settled residents in the UK.

This is a follow-on from Brexit, which ended freedom of movement and the right of people from the EU to come to the UK - and for UK citizens to go the other way.

By the end of May 2021, 5.6 million people had applied for the scheme - far more than expected (it was estimated in March 2019 that there were 3.7m EU nationals in the UK).

Who can apply?

Anyone who can prove they have been living in the UK continuously for at least five years before the end of 2020, can seek "settled status" - legal recognition that they live here permanently.

Anyone who shows they have been here for less than five years gets "pre-settled status".

This gives them the right to continue living in the UK - but they then have to make a application later on for full settled status.

What happens if people do not apply?

Some experts believe there could be more than 100,000 people who will fail to apply before the deadline.

Anyone who has not applied or received a status would technically become an illegal immigrant overnight and face problems:

·        it would be illegal for them to work

·        they would no longer be able to receive benefits

·        they would face huge charges for using the NHS

In England, private landlords must check the immigration status of tenants - and the housing charity Shelter predicts this will be a disaster.

Who could have missed the deadline?

There may be people from all walks of life who fail to register in time - but migration experts, lawyers and charities have identified a range of people who they are concerned about:

EU children

Children whose parents came to live and work in the UK under the pre-Brexit freedom-of-movement rules, but who never sought permanent settled status under British immigration laws.

These children cannot be sure they are British citizens or legally entitled to remain in all circumstances. The same could apply to children who are not yet born.

Marianne Lagrue from the Coram Children's Legal Centre says the numbers of EUSS applications for children are far short of what would be expected - meaning there could be thousands in this category.

As they leave compulsory school-age education, these children would be legally forbidden from going to colleges, universities and into work.

The Home Office has identified that there are more than 3,600 EU children in the care system. As of late April, EUSS applications had not been lodged for 1,220 of these.

Elderly EU citizens

EU citizens who arrived before the UK joined the European Union in 1973 are generally already allowed indefinite leave to remain.

However, there will be elderly people who came after that date who may have no proof of their legal residence in the UK, and may not realise that they need to apply to the EUSS.

Benefit claimants

A Whitehall leak last week revealed that officials have calculated that 130,000 of 820,000 European Union citizens eligible to claim one benefit or another, have not applied to the EUSS.

EU citizens registered under an old scheme

After the Brexit vote, there was a surge in applications to a previous scheme which confirmed permanent residence - some 390,000 cases.

But that document is now legally worthless. Nobody can rely on it anymore as legal proof of permanent residency.

Vulnerable groups

There will be EU citizens in the UK from poor and marginalised backgrounds who may not even know they should be applying to the scheme.

One example would be men and women trafficked by criminal gangs into modern-day slavery, such as the sex trade. Another would be victims of domestic abuse whose lives are controlled by their partners.

Oxford University's Migration Observatory has identified many other groups who could be affected.

How long do you have to make a late application?

The government is promising a "pragmatic and flexible" approach to late applications.

It says that anyone who has received a certificate proving they have applied will have their legal rights protected while officials process their paperwork.

Cyprus, the Fastest Route to EU Golden Visa Citizenship and Permanent Residency

Cyprus is a modern fast-growing EU country, which is also steeped in history. The Bible mentions the early Apostles who travelled to Cyprus and formed early Christian churches in the region during the days of Roman Empire.

As a member of the European Union and Commonwealth, Cyprus is strategically placed to take advantage of economic growth in a growing region straddling Europe and the Middle East.

Cyprus has recently been ranked the 5th best relocation destination in the world by an international lifestyle review (source: 2014 report prepared by Knight Frank, a leading independent, global real estate consultancy firm). Ranked by key business and leisure indicators, Cyprus was the only European country alongside Switzerland to make it into the top five – ahead of London, Madrid and Monaco. Cyprus ranked highly because of its favourable tax regime for new residents, particularly high net worth individuals. And with at least 320 days of sunshine a year, and classified as the sunniest European location, you can enjoy an incredible lifestyle on this beautiful island in the sun.

Europe has established itself as the most sought-after region in terms of high net worth immigration, accounting for over half of the total number of global citizenship applications, with the Caribbean in second place, followed by North America in third. Recent studies conducted by global immigration experts, ranked the Cyprus Citizenship by Investment Program among the “top ten best in the world”.

The Cypriot immigration policy and legal framework now enable Non-EU applicants to obtain Cypriot citizenship on an expedited basis – fast. There are a number of reasons the Cyprus Citizenship by Investment Program is now considered to be the most attractive in Europe, including:

·        Application process takes 6 months, with approval granted within 2 to 3 months, being by far the fastest route to EU Citizenship.

·        There is no requirement to make a donation to the local government, in contrast to many other citizenship programs worldwide.

·        Cyprus does not require applicants to live on the island prior, during or after the application process, unlike all other EU countries with citizenship programs that impose residency requirements.

·        Simple and straightforward application process with no requirements to disclose source of wealth or funds,

·        No medical testing, no interview, and no language requirements.

·        Approved by the EU (being one of only two CBI programs in Europe with official EU approval).

·        English is widely spoken.

Since 2013, there have been over thousands of successful applicants under the Cypriot programme, generating more than €3 billion in investment.

How does the Cyprus Citizenship and Passport to EU Programmework?

A minimum investment of €2.0 million in property or real estate is required, plus a donation of €75,000 to the Governments Research and Development fund  and €75,000  to the Land Development Organisation.

Cyprus uniquely offers a fast-track route to citizenship within just 6 months of making the required investment. This guarantees a Cypriot passport and citizenship of an EU country, giving the holder the right of freedom of movement and work, travel, study and to live anywhere within the EU, including countries such as Germany, France and Italy. The investment may be reduced down to €500,000 after 5 years.

The obvious attraction for high net worth individuals is the rapid citizenship for qualifying real estate investments.

How does the Cyprus Permanent Residency Programme work?

Investors can secure permanent residency rights in Cyprus through investment in new property or real estate in the country. The permanent residency programme is one of the fastest and straight forward investor visa programmes in Europe. It requires investment of only €300,000 into property to gain the Cyprus residency permit.

The permanent residency visa is granted within two months of the investment and covers the whole family including parents - of both the main applicant and spouse - plus dependent children up to the age of 25. Residency is valid for life and can be passed down to dependents and spouse.

The permanent residency programme offers rights of travel throughout the European Union and requires a single visit to Cyprus by all family members every two years.

Investments may be made by a company for which the main applicant and spouse are beneficial owners. The investment can be in to a maximum of two brand new properties provided they reach the €300,000 permanent residency limit.

Article 50 date 29 March 2017 and UK Brexit within 2 years

Earlier this week Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the Article 50 process to take Britain out of the European Union will be formally triggered on 29 March 2017.

The historic decision will start a two year period of intense negotiations with the UK’s EU partners over tariffs, membership of the single market and customs union, free movement of labour and immigration rights for the millions of European and British migrants who live in various parts of Europe.

In a statement, Brexit Secretary David Davis said: “We are on the threshold of the most important negotiation for this country for a generation.

“The Government is clear in its aims: a deal that works for every nation and region of the UK and indeed for all of Europe – a new, positive partnership between the UK and our friends and allies in the European Union.”

The fate of three million EU migrants living in the UK is still in the balance, as thousands apply for indefinite leave and British Citizenship. Since millions of British citizens live in EU countries and the UK still needs skilled foreign labour, there will be no mass deportations.

Despite the divorce, custody arrangements will have to be made. After all, like a divorced couple with children, the affairs of Britain and EU member states will be inexorably intertwined for many years to come.  

UK net migration fell by 49,000 to 273,000 in the year to September 2016 according to Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Immigration to the UK is estimated to be 596,000 – made up of 268,000 EU citizens, 257,000 non-EU citizens and 71,000 British citizens.

Whilst EU immigration from several countries went down, record numbers of Romanians and Bulgarians - 74,000 – came to live in the UK.

In the meantime, current UK Immigration Rules and EEA regulations still apply.

The historic week ends on a sad note following tragic events which took place in Westminster on Wednesday. Our condolences go out to the families of the people who lost their lives or suffered serious injuries, including a Police Officer and an American and Romanian tourist.

UK Visa £1,000 Immigration Skills charge on Tier 2 working Visas starts 6 April 2017

The new Immigration Skills Charge for large numbers of Tier 2 holders will come into force from 6 April 2017.  The Home Office levy will be imposed on UK employers holding Tier 2 sponsorship licences employing non-EEA migrants on Tier 2 working visas.

The Guardian recently reported that the skills levy on foreign workers could be extended to EU and EEA migrants post Brexit in order to reduce immigration and encourage employers to hire British workers first. Britain’s policy on European migrants resident in the UK has yet to be decided and will probably form part of ongoing negotiations once article 50 has been triggered later this month.

Net migration to the UK fell by 49,000 last year following the Brexit vote, but more likely due to earlier curbs on immigration. Meanwhile, thousands of EU citizens are applying for UK passports and Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) in the panic to beat possible Home Office restrictions.

The UK Immigration Minister, Robert Goodwill, has stated that that British businesses were over reliant on migrant labour and said that an apprenticeship levy would be put in place later in 2017, in order to help meet the government’s pledge to train more than three million apprentices prior to the 2020 general election.

Mr Goodwill said: “In April this year we are also bringing in the immigration skills charge for non-EEA skilled workers. If you want to recruit an Indian computer programmer on a four-year contract on top of the existing visa charges and the resident labour market test there will be a fee of £1,000 per year.

“So for a four-year contract that employer will need to pay a £4,000 immigration skills charge. That is something that currently applies to non-EU and it has been suggested to us that could be applied to EU.”.

In excess of 16,000 EU citizens were granted UK citizenship last year, indicating that despite Brexit and all the 'doom and gloom' predictions many Europeans want to remain living in Britain.
