UK Government Consider Temporary Working Visa Changes To Solve Driver And Agricultural Staff Shortages

UK Government Consider Temporary Working Visa Changes To Solve Driver And Staff Shortages

The UK Environment Secretary has confirmed that the government is weighing up options on how to deal with growing labour shortages in the food sector.

George Eustice said the government was considering whether changes could be made to the Seasonal Agricultural Workers' Scheme (SAWS) - the temporary working visa quota-based scheme that allows farmers to recruit overseas for seasonal jobs.

Trade bodies have warned of panic-buying and food shortages this Christmas unless urgent action is taken to address the lack of staff and thousands of job vacancies in the UK.

Some blame the shortages on Covid and Brexit, but staff shortages have been building up for years.

Mr Eustice said "the reality that there is an acute labour shortage at the moment across the UK economy".

The SAWS scheme allowed 30,000 temporary workers to admitted to the UK this year to fill job vacancies in agriculture - mostly working on fruit and vegetable farms. Migrants have long filled farming jobs, like picking and packing of produce, that British workers refuse to do.

Mr Eustice added that there are "some real concerns about how we'll deal with that spike in demand in the two weeks up to Christmas".

"We have SAWS and we're looking at options as to how we can change the focus of that and we hope to be able to say something on this shortly," he continued.

When asked if he would be looking at changes to visas to address workforce shortages, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said on Thursday: "If that was actually the solution, I'm sure we would move to it quickly and I don't rule out anything."

500,000 unfilled agricultural job vacancies

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has called for another emergency visa to allow firms to recruit from outside the UK.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he does "not believe people will be short of food" this autumn and winter, amid reports of some gaps on supermarket shelves.

Mr Eustice has previously said the government wanted to monitor whether workers who may be made redundant when the furlough schemes finish at the end of September could instead enter the labour market where there are shortages. Those include areas such as lorry driving or meat processing.

However, he said if that did not happen "then the beauty of a controlled immigration system is you can take steps to allow people to come in on temporary visas should you want".

NFU head Minette Batters warned ministers that the food and farming sector is on a "knife edge" because of labour shortages across the entire supply chain.

The letter, signed on behalf of a number of food and drink trade bodies, called for the introduction of a Covid-19 recovery visa to open up new recruitment opportunities.

"Without it, more shelves will go empty and consumers will panic buy to try to get through the winter," Ms Batters wrote.

Referring to an earlier NFU report, Ms Batters said that there were an estimated 500,000 unfilled vacancies in the industry.

Due to the shortages, some farmers have resorted to giving fruit and vegetables away rather than let it rot in their fields. Source: BBC

As well as the potential food shortage this Christmas, driver shortages are being blamed BP for growing fuel shortages in the UK.

The Home Office could include HGV Drivers on the shortage occupation list which would enable employers to apply for longer term working visas (work permits) to fill diver job vacancies.

This would fly in the face of the Brexit principle of controlling our borders and cutting immigration to boost jobs and pay for British workers.

Almost 5 million Migrants Granted UK Residence Under EU Settlement Scheme

Almost 5 million Granted UK Residence Under EU Settlement Scheme

Despite warnings of a mass ‘Brexit exodus’ of European migrants, it has emerged that just under five million people were granted the right to live and work in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme so far, according to official estimates.

Home Office figures reveal that, as of the end of June, some 4,908,760 EU citizens had been granted an immigration status to remain in the country as full freedom of movement to live and work in the UK came to a close following Brexit transition.

EU citizens – as well as people from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – and their families were invited to apply to the scheme by the June 30 deadline.

Quarterly data published this week showed that the Home Office had processed 5.5 million applications for settlement by the deadline, with the highest numbers of applications coming from Polish, Romanian and Italian nationals

The latest figures are much higher than the official estimate of how many EU nationals are living in the UK. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicated that in mid-2020 this was 3.5 million.

More than six million applications (6,050,860) were submitted between the launch of the scheme in March 2019 and the June 30 2021 cut-off date.

Over 2.8 million applicants were granted settled status, allowing them permanent leave to remain in the UK.

A further 2.3 million (2,327,850) were granted pre-settled status, meaning they need to reapply after living in the country for five years to gain permanent residence or indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Included in this number, immigration status was granted to 295,890 people from countries like India, Pakistan and Brazil under the scheme, which allows family members who are not EU or European Economic Area nationals to also apply.

The Home Office said: “Across all nationalities, the highest numbers of applications received were from Polish, Romanian and Italian nationals. This has been the trend throughout the life of the scheme.”

There were 109,430 applications refused, 80,600 withdrawn or void, and 79,730 were deemed invalid, where the Home Office decides someone is not eligible to apply or has failed to provide sufficient proof of residence.

The Home Office said 8% of the applications were from “repeat applicants” (472,220).

Among the applications were more than one million from children (1,002,280).

Some 772,260 of the applications from under-18s finalised by the end of June were granted an immigration status, while 32,870 requests were refused, withdrawn, void or invalid, the figures indicate.

In London, Newham saw the highest number of applications to the scheme (142,120). Outside London, the highest number was in Birmingham in the West Midlands (138,490).

It is still not known how many people in the UK are eligible for the scheme but could remain in the country undocumented.

Anyone who has not yet applied may have lost their lawful immigration status after the deadline, although late applications can be made under limited reasonable grounds and the Government has said there is no cut-off date for doing so.

Those who applied before the deadline but have yet to receive a decision are protected under existing rights, subject to the outcome of the application and any appeal.

Anyone who does not apply and continues to live in the UK without being able to prove their immigration status could face enforcement action. Most migrating EU citizens will in future need a work permit to live and work in the UK.

The UK has one million job vacancies including a shortage of lorry drivers and builders, much of which has been blamed on Brexit. However, the latest Home Office settlement figures appears to contradict this claim.

The mainstream media keep spreading rumours that there will be empty supermarket shelves this Christmas because of the lorry driver shortage and Brexit, yet everywhere I look there’s a lorry or van thundering down my street!

You can’t move for delivery vans dropping off goods to people who for whatever reason prefer not to go to a shop.

Finally, if most of our food is imported, would that not be delivered by a lorry from the country from which the food is being sent? Of course it would! That’s why our motorways are clogged up with juggernauts from Spain, Netherlands, Romania, Poland and just about every other EU country.

Interview with outstanding Filipino Migrant’s 11-Year-Old Child Genius Who Wants To Study Medicine At Oxford Will Amaze You

Chloe was born in London to immigrant filipino overseas worker (OFW) parents who migration to the UK for a better life.

Although they worked hard day and night, money was tight for the family you came to the UK with nothing.

Despite her humble beginning, Chloe showed an early aptitude for learning. She was particularly talented with mathematics and was racing ahead of her school friends after her parents found the money to send her to private Kumon lessons.

At 8-years old Chloe could solve complex quadratic equations normally taught to A-Level students. She was even able to demonstrate this skill on her YouTube channel: -

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdWHYVaijhR29bOqyvEwCwA

The child genius scored 143 on a recent Mensa test, but brains alone are not enough without hard work.

Chloe is extremely disciplined with her time and plans every aspect of her day. She also sets short and long-term goals.

She aims high. Having won a place at one of London’s top high schools starting this month, she has set her sights becoming a paediatrician at Oxford University.

Her now single mum devotes her life to Chloe even if her salary as a care supervisor does not stretch very far when it comes to paying for an expensive uniform or Kumon lessons.

Chloe is an engaging speaking and takes part in pageants and talent shows in her spare time. She’s also a talented artist and an avid reader of a wide range of subjects from Shakespeare to world affairs and anything she can find in her encyclopaedia!

Her work ethic and positive attitude are typical of the many migrants who succeed in the UK despite starting with no money, no contacts and none of the advantages of native-born Britons.

Chloe and her mother are an inspiration to us all and I have no doubt that she will go far and wish her every success.

I notice that kids are very good at creating videos and posts on social media. Unlike me, they have grown up with IT and social media, but that doesn’t mean us oldies can’t get in on the act!

EU settlement deadline 30 June 2021: How register to avoid missing the deadline

EU settlement deadline 30 June 2021: How register to avoid missing the deadline

Last chance. Wednesday 30 June is the deadline for most European Union (EU) citizens to apply to live permanently in the UK as settled residents.

The take-up of the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) has been huge - but there are serious concerns that thousands of people have still not sought to register. Anyone who is not registered loses their legal right to live in the UK.

What is the EU Settlement Scheme?

The EUSS was launched in March 2019 to register EU citizens as settled residents in the UK.

This is a follow-on from Brexit, which ended freedom of movement and the right of people from the EU to come to the UK - and for UK citizens to go the other way.

By the end of May 2021, 5.6 million people had applied for the scheme - far more than expected (it was estimated in March 2019 that there were 3.7m EU nationals in the UK).

Who can apply?

Anyone who can prove they have been living in the UK continuously for at least five years before the end of 2020, can seek "settled status" - legal recognition that they live here permanently.

Anyone who shows they have been here for less than five years gets "pre-settled status".

This gives them the right to continue living in the UK - but they then have to make a application later on for full settled status.

What happens if people do not apply?

Some experts believe there could be more than 100,000 people who will fail to apply before the deadline.

Anyone who has not applied or received a status would technically become an illegal immigrant overnight and face problems:

·        it would be illegal for them to work

·        they would no longer be able to receive benefits

·        they would face huge charges for using the NHS

In England, private landlords must check the immigration status of tenants - and the housing charity Shelter predicts this will be a disaster.

Who could have missed the deadline?

There may be people from all walks of life who fail to register in time - but migration experts, lawyers and charities have identified a range of people who they are concerned about:

EU children

Children whose parents came to live and work in the UK under the pre-Brexit freedom-of-movement rules, but who never sought permanent settled status under British immigration laws.

These children cannot be sure they are British citizens or legally entitled to remain in all circumstances. The same could apply to children who are not yet born.

Marianne Lagrue from the Coram Children's Legal Centre says the numbers of EUSS applications for children are far short of what would be expected - meaning there could be thousands in this category.

As they leave compulsory school-age education, these children would be legally forbidden from going to colleges, universities and into work.

The Home Office has identified that there are more than 3,600 EU children in the care system. As of late April, EUSS applications had not been lodged for 1,220 of these.

Elderly EU citizens

EU citizens who arrived before the UK joined the European Union in 1973 are generally already allowed indefinite leave to remain.

However, there will be elderly people who came after that date who may have no proof of their legal residence in the UK, and may not realise that they need to apply to the EUSS.

Benefit claimants

A Whitehall leak last week revealed that officials have calculated that 130,000 of 820,000 European Union citizens eligible to claim one benefit or another, have not applied to the EUSS.

EU citizens registered under an old scheme

After the Brexit vote, there was a surge in applications to a previous scheme which confirmed permanent residence - some 390,000 cases.

But that document is now legally worthless. Nobody can rely on it anymore as legal proof of permanent residency.

Vulnerable groups

There will be EU citizens in the UK from poor and marginalised backgrounds who may not even know they should be applying to the scheme.

One example would be men and women trafficked by criminal gangs into modern-day slavery, such as the sex trade. Another would be victims of domestic abuse whose lives are controlled by their partners.

Oxford University's Migration Observatory has identified many other groups who could be affected.

How long do you have to make a late application?

The government is promising a "pragmatic and flexible" approach to late applications.

It says that anyone who has received a certificate proving they have applied will have their legal rights protected while officials process their paperwork.

The Home Office says that the scheme remains "indefinitely" open - but only if the individual can show they had reasonable grounds for missing the 30 June deadline. Source: BBC

There is growing evidence that hundreds of thousands of EU citizens returned home during the lockdown in 2020. Many of those migrant workers have yet to return, creating a labour shortage in areas like care, hospitality and transport.

Broke immigrant to millionaire!

During the last 20 years, I’ve met thousands of successful people have who migrated to the UK, but the person sticks out in my mind is someone who was not only broke when I met her, but also deep in debt with a terrible credit history.

She was an immigrant to this country who came here with nothing to declare except a burning ambition to succeed.

There was something about her that told me that she had a powerful hunger and desire to build a better life for herself and her daughter.

Although she had always worked hard, she instinctively knew that hard work alone was not enough.

After I started mentoring her and gave her 3 steps to follow, this single mum got herself together and changed her money habits.

3 steps to financial success

Step 1 Where are you now?

We took stock of exactly where she was, what money was coming in and where it was going. Most people have no idea “where it all goes”.

Step 2 Planning

Having established where she was, we started planning her financial journey out of debt and towards financial freedom. Most people have no plan, no roadmap and simply live week-to-week.

Step 3 Financial education

The next step was education. She took on board financial education and learned fast! She learned how to start accumulating and attracting money and use other people’s money (OPM) to become financially free.

This student was very teachable and eager to learn. Whereas a lot of people say, "I can’t do that" or “it can’t be done” and “only the rich can do that”, she would take instruction on board and say, "done that, what next?"

I was proud of her achievements but cannot take full credit. I may have pointed her in the right direction, but she took the action. She did not just sit around chanting and waiting for the ‘universe’ to send her money in the post.

In the following 5 years she built up over £1 million in property and business assets

She worked hard of course, no harder than she would have plodding along in a job for 40 years.

Yes, she had to put in a bit of extra effort at the start, but that saved her years of work, and enabled her to retire young to pursue her passion in politics and charity work.

She also paid to educate her nephew and niece by sending them to university back home. They became nurses and she helped them get jobs here for the NHS - a passport to a lifelong stream of income!

With the best intentions in the world, she could never have done all this without money.

Enjoying the fruits of your success.

Being financially free meant she had choices in life. The opportunity to travel when she wanted to, meet friends for lunch or go shopping for the day with the girls.

Time freedom to enjoy with her family without having to ask permission from her boss.

She was also able to exchange her old Nissan Micra for a shiny new Porsche!

However, she only bought a new car when she had built up capital and passive income from property and business assets to be able to afford it.

The car was an outward expression of her wealth, but the real wealth was in her property and business.

The UK is open for business and encourages entrepreneurship. Starting a limited company is simple with far fewer restrictions than other European countries. Non-UK citizens are also allowed to own property and businesses.

Of course, she is not alone in the millions of immigrants who have hunger and passion to succeed. There’s something about the character of a person who leaves everything behind to make a new life abroad. British migrants have done extremely well in Australia, Canada and America.

If someone can come here starting with nothing, with no money, no local knowledge or contacts, as well as a language barrier and still make it, anyone can.

Property Boom Continues, House Prices Soar By 10.9% And Set To Rise To H...

UK Property Boom Continues As House Prices Soar By 10.9% And Sales Forecast To Rise To The Highest Level Since The 2007 Market Peak

British house prices leaped by an annual 10.9%, the most in almost seven years, and they look set to rise further as people search new homes after the pandemic, one of the country’s largest mortgage lender the Nationwide said.

Almost 70% homeowners considering a move said they would still go ahead even without the unlikely extension of a tax incentive by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Nationwide said, according to a survey it conducted in late April.

The latest figures demonstrate the scale of the surge in house prices which hit a new record high at an average of £242,832, according to Nationwide, which whilst not the official Land Registry data is widely respected by the industry.

Nationwide added that house prices were 1.8% higher than in April.

Nationwide said there was scope for annual house price growth to accelerate further in the coming months, given how weak the housing market was in early stages of the pandemic.

However, if unemployment rises sharply later in 2021 - when Sunak's jobs protection programme is due to expire - there was scope for activity to slow, perhaps sharply, it said.

Official data from the Office for National Statistics has shown that house prices in March jumped by just over 10%, the largest annual rise by that measure in nearly 14 years – prior to the 2007 peak and later property and stock market crash.

Not all areas are booming and parts of London are seeing sharp price reductions on flats.

Coastal hotspots - in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset - have seen house prices rise by as much as 48% in a year as people ‘escape to the country’!

One million Britons fear losing homes when eviction ban ends - as up to 400,000 tenants have already been served notice or told to expect it due to unpaid rent over pandemic, The Daily Mail reports.

The tenant eviction ban expired on 1 June, which could see thousands of people with rent arrears evicted by bailiffs.

·        Ban lifted meaning bailiff-enforced evictions can take place from now

·        Government introduced ban to support renters through the Covid-19 pandemic

·        Charity says that 400,000 renters have already been served with eviction notice

·        A further 450,000 households are in rent arrears according to research

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation said 400,000 have already been served with an eviction notice or told they may be evicted and a further 450,000 households are in arrears with rent, JRF said.

In practice, possession claims leading to eventual eviction could take 6-12 months to go get through the county court system, which is already overloaded with all manner of legal cases.

Over 60% of buy-to-let landlords own just one property and many of whom are paying mortgages with little or no chance of recovering thousands of pounds of rent arrears built up during the lockdown.

Six Reasons Why Everyone Should Apply For A Second Passport Citizenship Or Residency?

Why Apply For A Second Passport Citizenship Or Residency?

The number of people seeking a second passport, especially high net worth individuals, is growing rapidly.

Holding dual or multiple citizenships is a step to towards ‘internationalizing’ your life so that you are not under the control of a single government.

You have more freedom of movement and do not need to worry about civil unrest or if your government suddenly decides to raise the taxes, which is already happening in the US.

A second passport or residency in another country means you can reap all the benefits of tax optimization, improved travel potential and protection against controlling governments.

Prior to the First World War, you didn’t need a passport for international travel. However, in the last few decades, freedom of movement has been subject to an increasing number of restrictions, including visas and permits to live and work abroad and even to leave some countries. In 2020, UK citizens may have been shocked to be told that it was “illegal to travel”.

Regardless of where you live or how valuable your passport is, you can still benefit from the political diversification that comes with a second passport or permanent residency in another country.

Here are my top 6 reasons why everyone needs a second passport:

1. Financial Options

A second citizenship opens the door to a wider range of international financial services. Governments, for instance U.S. tax authorities, can have a long reach.

2. Foreign Policy Backlash

Western government frequently engage in international conflicts and sanctions, which can make its citizens a target for terrorist attacks.

3. Increased Visa-Free Travel

Applying visas before a trip is time consuming and expensive. A good second passport, such as an Maltese EU passport offers you visa-free access, as well as the ability to live and work throughout the European Union, to more countries than you had before.

4: Avoid People Controls

A second passport or residency gives you an alternative option should your home government introduce restrictions on where citizens can leave.

Preventing people from leaving is no longer the preserve of authoritarian regimes, as passports, the property of the government, can be revoked.

5. Tax

With western governments raising taxes to pay for the lockdown, high net worth individuals can preserve their wealth by relocating their business and residence. This is a complex area and you should take advice.

6. Family Benefits

The benefits and privileges of a second passport can be passed to generations of current and future children and grandchildren.

There are a number of countries offering citizenship or permanent residence in return for investment (e.g. in property, business, bank deposits or government bonds) including EU nations, such as Malta, Cyprus and Portugal, as well as the Caribbean and the Americas.

Schemes range from premier citizenship programmes like Malta CBI, requiring investments of up to one million Euros for fast citizenship for all the family, to residency schemes with the possibility of citizenship in the future.

Malta’s new citizenship programme, introduced 29 March 2021, is the at the top of the Global Citizenship Programs Index (GCPI). Austria’s Private Residence Program and the Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program share top spot in the Global Residence Programs Index (GRPI).

Candidates for second citizenship come from Russia, China, The Middles East, Africa and increasingly the US and UK.

These are not skilled worker schemes and you will need around $500,000 to become an EU resident. For those with less capital, there are cheaper options in places like Panama, Ecuador and former Eastern Bloc countries. All countries want to attract investment and high net worth people to boost their economy.

In this job you will never run out of work!

In these uncertain and rapidly changing times, it is important to choose an occupation which gives you some guarantee of a long-term future.

In the UK, the Home Office publishes an official list of ‘shortage occupations’, for which a qualified and experienced overseas migrant may qualify for a Skilled Worker visa.

The list includes jobs such as, Health Service and Residential Day Care or Domiciliary Managers, various scientists and engineers, web development professionals, nurses and senior care workers.

The official government list for working visa qualification, only covers a fraction of the huge labour shortages in the UK.

According to the report by Luminate, the following industries experienced a particularly large number of hard-to-fill vacancies at professional level:

·        architectural and engineering activities

·        computer programming and consultancy

·        education

·        employment and HR

·        financial services

·        human health activities

·        legal and accounting services

·        office administrative, support and business activities

·        public administration and defence

·        residential care activities

·        retail trade

·        social work.

However, both of these lists contain glaring omissions- green jobs. In order to meet climate change targets, industry will need hundreds of thousands of skilled workers to fill new ‘green’ jobs.

For instance, is estimated that 23 million gas boilers will need to be replaced in the UK, but there are not enough trained engineers to do the work. There is a shortage of 100,000 boiler engineers right now!

Boiler engineers will have jobs for life replacing old boilers with electric and hydrogen boilers and servicing the new boilers.

Millions of petrol and diesel cars will have to be replaced as governments around the world tax them out of existence. This will create a huge number of new skilled jobs.

China is investing massively in new technology and green energy, as is the UK. The US could be left behind in what’s being called China’s century.

The 20th Century was America’s, after Great Britain’s empire started to unwind following the German led First and Second World Wars.

China is effectively colonising the world’s resources through trade rather than war.

If you exclude the disastrous Chairman Mao century, China was one of the leading economies in the world in 18 of the last 20 centuries?

The UK government recently announced a massive retraining programme to reskill millions of workers whose jobs have become redundant due to new technology.

The important word is “skilled”. Tens of millions of unskilled, as well as many skilled and technical jobs in accounting and law, will disappear in the next decade, so prepare yourself.

Self-driving vehicles, AI and robotic technology are already here!

Education is key to your future. Not just formal education, but also relevant vocational and on-the-job training in which you can ‘earn while you learn.

An increasing number of people prefer to quit the rat race and start their own businesses, which is great.

Caution. Don’t fire your boss until you can replace your salary with your new business and do not spend all your savings or borrow to set up an expensive physical business like a shop.

An ideal way to start is to set up a part-time online business, which you can run from home with little or no capital.
