UK Immigration Figures Soar to 745,000 Forcing Government to Cut Working and Student Visa Numbers in the “Biggest Ever Cut in Net Migration”

UK Immigration Figures Soar to 745,000 Forcing Government to Cut Working and Student Visa Numbers in the “Biggest Ever Cut in Net Migration”

The British Home Secretary, James Cleverly has announced sweeping changes to the UK Immigration Rules in a bid to bring in the ‘biggest ever cut in net immigration’ which reached the ‘biggest ever’ 745,000 in 2022 – after 1.2 million came in to the country.

Working visas and student numbers will curbed, with new rules on minimum salaries and dependents to prevent what he described as ‘abuse’.

New immigration rules

Most migrants wanting to work in the UK will still have to apply for a visa through a points-based system (PBS).

Starting spring 2024, applicants will need to have a job offer with a revised higher salary in order to get a work visa.

The new minimum salary will be at least £38,700 - increased by nearly 50% from the current minimum £26,200.

Health and social care jobs will be exempt as there are still shortages of care workers I the UK.

However, overseas care workers will no longer be able to bring in family dependants.

The points system was introduced by the Labour government in 2008 – as part of a previous immigration overhaul - non-EU migrants. The system overhauled by the Conservatives after the Brexit vote.

The 2020 version of the PBS covers EU and non-EU migrants.

The UK has "shortage occupation list" to help employers fill certain job vacancies.

Shortage jobs have a lower salary requirement, so applicants to obtain the required number of points to get a working visa.

Shortage Occupation Jobs include:

·        jobs in health and education

·        care workers

·        graphic designers

·        construction workers

·        vets

Employers are allowed to pay foreign workers 80% of the job's usual "going rate" to fill vacancies, which will be abolished from next spring.

Basic level international students will be prevented from bringing their dependents to the UK after figures reached 153,000 last year.

The UK will become a tougher places for students ad workers with higher NHS fees and minimum salaries above the national average. Meanwhile, other countries, such as Australia and Canada are welcoming students and workers with open arms with an easier route to permanent residence (PR) and citizenship than the UK.

Global Health Emergency Due To Acute Shortage of Nurses In Western Countries Like Canada, But Also In Africa, India And The Philippines

The Worldwide Health Organisation, World Economic Forum (WEF) and the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) all report that there is a huge global shortage of nurses expected to reach 13 million by 2030, according to the WEF.

The Nursing Times goes even further claiming a shortage of 30 million nurses across the world, including in countries that provide nurses for international recruitment, leading to a global health emergency, according to the latest report from the International Council of Nurses.

The shortage of nurses across the world now extends to countries that provide nurses for international recruitment, such as India and The Philippines.

The latest ICN report reveals that countries that have a tradition of training nurses in order for them to emigrate to work in higher income countries, such as Australia, Canada, US and the UK, are experiencing their own nursing shortage.

The government in the Philippines has now acknowledged a shortage of up to 350,000 nurses, but thousands of nursing degree graduates end up working in call centres due to a lack of training and job opportunities, while private universities churn out hundreds of thousands more graduates each year.

Nurse recruitment from India and The Philippines accounted for 67% of all internationally trained staff that joined the NMC register in 2021-22.

Low pay and opportunities to migrate to the West continues to fuel a strong demand from Indian and Filipino nurses. Thousands are applying for nursing jobs or nurse conversion courses in Canada Australia, Middle East, UK and the US.

The report, Recover to Rebuild: Investing in the Nursing Workforce for Health System Effectiveness, lays out the devastating impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on nurses around the world.

“The worldwide shortage of nurses needs to be considered as a global health emergency"

Reasons for the nursing staff shortage range from ‘burnout’ of western nurses to an aging population in countries like the US, UK, Japan and Canada.

According to the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), there is a current shortage of nurses in Canada estimated at more than 50,000 and this shortage is expected to increase to 139,700 by 2026.

The CNA also reports that the nursing workforce in Canada is aging, with nearly one-third of nurses aged 55 or older.

As these nurses retire, the demand for nursing services will continue to grow. In addition, the aging population in Canada will also increase the demand for healthcare services.

Good News And Opportunities For Landlords As Fixed Mortgage Rates Fall A...

Good News And Opportunities For Buy-to-Let Landlords As Mortgage Interest Rates Finally Start To Fall And EPC Changes Dropped

In this week’s Money Tips Podcast edition:

·        Fixed mortgage rates ease following Bank of England’s rate hold.

·        Opportunities for landlords to increase rental returns and/or reduce management time and costs through leasing, holiday lets and rent-to-rent.

·        EPC Changes Dropped

The Bank of England held rate this month, as inflation starts to ease, and the economy slows. Lenders have responded with lower fixed rates.

Watch full video here: https://youtu.be/Y5nEzLl9wmw

Banks are in the business of lending, which means they must make mortgage deals more attractive for borrowers.

However, headline fixed rates are not always the best deal when fees and charges are taken into account.

For instance, SBI are offering a market leading fixed rate mortgage at 3.9%! Sounds great until you realise that the arrangement fee is a whopping 5%! This would amount to £10,000 on a £200,000 loan.

You could be better off paying a higher rate with a lower fee, which is why it pays to use an experience independent adviser. A good independent mortgage broker can guide you through the minefield of mortgage deals.

Higher interest rates have forced landlords to look for better returns and yields on their properties.

The rent-to-rent and holiday let market has grown in the last few years and there are many established and reputable companies offering a variety of solutions for landlords seeking higher returns or less management.

Some offer guaranteed rents for periods ranging from 2 – 5 years, while others will share profits with the landlord on holiday lets, which could be higher but has no guarantee.

The property must be in a “habitable” condition, but in the case of holiday lets must also be fully furnished to a high standard at the landlord’s expense – this can involve spending up to £10,000 to get the property in showroom condition.

There is a huge demand for properties for contractors, homeless families and asylum seekers.

Do your own due diligence and stick to establish, reputable companies with a good track record.

If you have a mortgage, check that your lender will allow a company let or lease and obtain their permission to avoid being in breach of your mortgage terms. This could result in your mortgage being cancelled or “called in” = i.e., we want our money back in 30 days!

Your buildings insurer will also need to be informed, otherwise you risk having any claims, for instance a fire, refused.

NEW THREAT To Landlords And Employers As Home Office Tripple Fines For Supporting Illegal Immigrants

If you would like to take things to the next level and learn more about managing your money and becoming financially free, I invite you to join me on my 1 Day S.M.A.R,T MONEY WorkshopSaturday 19 August 10-5pm (with regular breaks and a lunch).

The UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, announced this week that fines will to be more than tripled for employers and landlords who allow illegal migrants to work for them or rent their properties.

The civil or non-criminal penalty for employers, last raised in 2014, will be increased to up to £45,000 per illegal worker for a first breach from £15,000, and up to £60,000 for repeat breaches from £20,000.

Fines will rise from £80 per lodger and £1,000 per occupier for a first breach to up to £5,000 per lodger and £10,000 per occupier.

Repeat offenders will face fines of £10,000 per lodger and £20,000 per occupier, up from £500 and £3,000 respectively.

The higher penalties, which require a lower burden of proof than a criminal prosecution, will be introduced in 2024.

The Home Office will consult on options to strengthen action against licensed businesses who are employing illegal workers later this year.

Almost 5,000 civil penalties have been issued to employers with a total value of £88.4m since 2018.

In the same period, buy-to-let landlords have been hit with over 320 civil penalties valued at £215,500.

Minister for Immigration Robert Jenrick said that employers and landlords should already be checking the eligibility of anyone they employ or let a property to. There are a number of ways to do this, which are not changing, including via a manual check of original documentation and a Home Office online checking system. The online check takes only 5 minutes.

Over 17,000 people have entered the UK illegally this year on small boats from France.

UK inflation fell to 6.8% (from 7.9) this week raising hopes that the Bank of England will hold interest rates at 5,25% - the highest for 15 years - next month.

However, with core inflation unchanged at 6.9% interest rates could rise to 5.5% adding further pressure on the housing market and driving the UK further towards a recession.

We are not out the economic woods yet, so learning how to mange your money has never been so crucial.

UK Illegal Migration Bill Becomes Law

The controversial Illegal Migration Bill has become law as the government prevailed over strong opposition in the Lords and figures show the number of migrants crossing the English Channel this year exceeded 14,000.

The asylum reforms form a major part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's promise to "stop the boats” and will prevent migrants from claiming asylum in the UK if they have arrived here illegally.

The disputed Bill became an Act of Parliament on Thursday after receiving Royal Assent, the same day it was revealed that 14,701 Channel illegal boat crossings have been made so far this year.

The government are hoping the new law will see detained people removed without delay, to their home country or a safe third country.

The Home Office is locked in a legal battle with the Supreme Court which will decide whether migrants can legally be deported to Rwanda, following a Court of Appeal ruling the plan unlawful.

Although there are details yet to be ironed out, this week, "people who arrive illegally under the new laws will be banned from re-entering the UK and will not be eligible for settlement or citizenship, except in limited circumstances," the Home Office said.

The Prime Minister and the Home Secretary Suella Braverman argue that taxpayers are shouldering the £6 million daily bill for migrants to be accommodated in luxury hotels.

This week a huge barge planned to house 500 asylum seekers was met by protesters as it arrived in Dorset's Portland Port.

With a general election looming, Rishi Sunak is desperate to reduce net migration, which exceeded 1 million last year.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that in 2022: 1.2 million people migrated into the UK and 557,000 people emigrated, a net migration figure of 606,000 as of the end of June 2022.

International students could be targeted in a bid to slash immigration by the end of the current parliament.

Banking Crisis And UK 2023 Budget Summary, What You Need To Know

Banking Crisis And UK 2023 Budget Summary, What You Need To Know

Another US bank bailed while Paris burns.

As expected, Jeremy Hunt’s first budget did little to excite investors and the property industry.

With the country still recovering from the events of the last two years and massive Government debt there was not much money to give away in this budget. Chancellors usually save that for a pre-election budget!

Jeremy Hunt highlighted concerns about the banking sector, following the collapse of America’s Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and a further bailout by the US banks, but reassured us that the UK banking industry is safe.

European Central Bank supervisors see no contagion for euro zone banks from recent sector turmoil, a source said on Friday, after U.S. lenders threw First Republic Bank a $30 billion lifeline and tapped record amounts from the Federal Reserve.

Large U.S. banks on Thursday were forced to rescue the San Francisco-based lender, which was caught up in market volatility triggered by the collapse of two other mid-size U.S. banks.

This week, Credit Suisse went ‘cap in hand’ to the central for an emergency bank loan of up to $54 billion to shore up its liquidity – banking terms for having no money!

The National Residential Landlords Association described it as missed opportunity to tackle the supply crisis in the private rented sector and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said it was disappointed by the lack of housing ambition in the budget.

However, the Chancellor did announce 12 new Investment Zones across the UK and relaxed Immigration Rules to help the construction industry cope with staff shortages.

Most of us will be paying more tax  in the coming years due to the ‘fiscal drag’ caused by tax allowances not rising in line with inflation each year.

Here’s a summary of the main points, but you can read the full budget speech at the commons library - https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9748/

Budget main points

·        Energy cap limiting typical household energy bills to £2,500 a year extended to June

·        £200m to bring energy charges for prepayment meters into line with prices for customers paying by direct debit - affects 4m households

·        Lifetime Allowance – the cap on amount workers can accumulate in pensions savings over their lifetime before having to pay extra tax (currently £1.07m) to be abolished

·        Tax-free yearly allowance for pension pot to rise from £40,000 to £60,000

·        The 5p cut to fuel duty on petrol and diesel, due to end in April, kept for another year

·        Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) predicts the UK will avoid recession in 2023, but the economy will shrink by 0.2%? Economy shrinking but not in recession!

·        Growth of 1.8% predicted for next year, with 2.5% in 2025 and 2.1% in 2026

·        UK's inflation rate predicted to fall to 2.9% by the end of this year, down from 10.7% in the last three months of 2022

·        Underlying debt forecast to be 92.4% of GDP this year, rising to 93.7% in 2024

·        Corporation tax, paid by businesses on taxable profits over £250,000, confirmed to increase from 19% to 25% making the UK a less competitive place to invest

·        Companies with profits between £50,000 and £250,000 to pay between 19% and 25%

·        Companies able to deduct investment in new machinery and technology to lower their taxable profits

·        Tax breaks and other benefits for 12 new Investment Zones across the UK, funded by £80m each over the next five years

·        £200m this year to help local councils in England repair potholes

·        £900m for new super computer facility, to help UK's AI industry

·        30 hours of free childcare for working parents in England expanded to cover one and two-year-olds, to be rolled out in stages from April 2024

·        A £600 "incentive payments" for those becoming childminders, and relaxed rules in England to let childminders look after more children

·        New fitness-to-work testing regime to qualify for health-related benefits

·        New voluntary employment scheme for disabled people in England and Wales, called Universal Support

·        Tougher requirements to look for work and increased job support for lead child carers on universal credit

·        £63m for programmes to encourage retirees over 50 back to work, "returnerships" and skills boot camps
